Segmented button

Present a small set of related, mutually comparable options in one connected control — pick one, or toggle several.

Selection semantics

The group communicates whether one or several options can be active.

  • One active in single mode

Single select behaves like a radio group — exactly one segment is the current value.

  • Independent toggles in multiple mode

Each segment toggles on its own; selecting one does not clear the others.

  • Every segment needs a name

Give each item a label; an icon-only segment still needs an accessible name for assistive technology.

Keyboard and focus

Segments are real buttons, so they take focus and activate with the keyboard.

  • Tab reaches each segment

Focus moves through the segments in reading order; a visible focus ring marks the current one.

  • Space or Enter selects

Activating a focused segment applies (single) or toggles (multiple) its value.

  • Disabled segments are skipped

A disabled segment or group is not focusable or activatable.
