Form input
Number input
Predictable numeric models, decimal-safe stepping, and consistent M3 controls.Choose it deliberately
A number input is for values a person types or nudges — quantities whose digits mean something.
Use when
The value is a quantity: a price, a count, a dimension. Precision matters and the user may already know the exact figure.
Choose something else when
Only the position in a range matters — volume, opacity — use a slider. Card numbers, codes and phone numbers are identifiers, not quantities: use a text field, they must not be stepped or regrouped.
Composition
Pick the controls and the unit by how the value is edited.
Controls
`split` gives touch-sized zones for small adjustments, `stacked` is compact for dense desktop forms, `scrub` turns the label into a drag handle for design tools, and `false` leaves typing and the keyboard.
Units
Put the unit in the field with `units` rather than in the label, so it stays next to the number and a unit change stays one control.
