One typed list in, correct landmark, ordered-list and current-page semantics out.

Choose it deliberately

Use the component when its contract matches the user task.

The user needs to see and climb the position of a page inside a real hierarchy.

It is not a step indicator, a tab bar, or a history of visited pages.

Sizing, labels, and neighboring elements should preserve visual hierarchy.

Titles stay short: the trail supports the page heading, it does not replace it.

Provide id or to per item so reordering never reuses the wrong key.
